My name is Dr. Tarik Al-Kalla, and I am honored to lead the team at Optimal Weight Loss and Surgery Consultants. My journey in the field of surgery began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from the University of Houston in Texas. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Lubbock. I then completed my residency in general surgery at Michigan State University/Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, where I gained extensive experience in various surgical procedures. My passion for minimally invasive techniques led me to pursue a fellowship in MIS/Bariatrics Surgery at St. Luke’s Surgical Specialists in Kansas City, Missouri. I have obtained several awards and accolades including 2024 Texas Super Doctors® Rising Stars, Best Doctor in Collin county D magazine for bariatric surgery multiple years (2022, 2023, 2024), Top doctors (2022, 2023), Michigan State University/Spectrum Health Emergency General Surgery Chief Award during surgery residency, and Intuitive robotic surgery proctor. I am also the Trauma Medical Director at Medical City Frisco. With a commitment to excellence and a patient-centered approach, I strive to provide the highest standard of care. Dr. Al-Kalla is the best surgeon and most knowledgeable in his field of expertise. I had a previous sleeve surgery in 2021 and have had issue after issue from it. After putting up with the issues and not knowing they were for sure from that surgery I finally sought answers. I had a wonderful GI doctor refer me to him. He immediately knew what to do to. I could not eat 2 bites without severe pain before he preformed my surgery. After my surgery I never felt any pain or nausea while recovering. Nor have I had any pain when I eat. I feel the surgery he preformed had permitted me to have a normal lifestyle again. I truly feel he is a very nice ,understanding and the best in his line of work. I am so thankful my GI doctor felt the same and referred me to him.
Dr. Al-Kalla performed an emergency appendix removal on me, after it had already burst. It was a complicated surgery with a portion of the small intestine removed, but Dr. Al-Kalla performed a magnificent job. I am expected to make a full recovery with full functionality. He really saved my life and am grateful he was the surgeon on call at Baylor McKinney Texas hospital on that day. I recommend him highly.
Dr. Al-Kalla performed an appendectomy on my husband recently. The appendix had ruptured, and my husband was in significant pain. Dr. Al-Kalla patiently walked our family through the procedure and assured us that he would keep us informed. He is kind, professional, knowledgeable, patient and compassionate.
